Privacy breach reporting update

According to the Australian Financial Review the Privacy Commissioner has received 67 voluntary data breach notifications so far in the 2013-2014 financial year.

Not all are publicised. The latest notification disclosed by the Commissioner was from eBay Inc. Hackers have gained access to the names, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses and passwords of eBay’s 128m active users.

The Privacy Commissioner is considering whether he needs to investigate the matter.

A Private Member’s Bill to introduce mandatory data breach notification is currently before Parliament.
