Penalty units increase

The Crimes (Amount of Penalty Unit) Instrument 2023 has been registered to increase the value of Commonwealth penalty units from 1 July 2023, in line with the indexation formula in the Crimes Act 1914 (Cth).

The amount of a penalty unit is now $313, up from $275 each.

The increased amount will only apply to offences committed on or after 1 July 2023.

Commonwealth civil penalties are usually expressed in a number of penalty units.

The amount of a penalty unit will next be increased in accordance with the CPI increase on 1 July 2026 and then every 3 years.
