Life insurers and family and domestic violence

The Financial Services Council (FSC) has announced that the new Life Insurance Code of Practice which takes effect from 1 July 2023 will include a requirement for insurers to develop and publish a policy on supporting people experiencing family and domestic violence.

In the meantime the FSC has released (voluntary) new industry-wide guidelines on family and domestic violence setting out 11 areas that each life insurer’s policy might cover.

The Code requires life insurer subscribers to have internal policies and training to understand and decide how best to support customers and others who experience family and domestic violence, and to have a publicly available policy about how they will support affected customers.
