Australian regulatory update following May 2025 election

At the election on 3 May 2025 Labor retained Government by increasing its majority in the House of Representatives. But it will rely on other parties to pass legislation in the Senate.

The new Parliament is scheduled to sit for the first time from 22 July 2025 to 31 July and then from 25 August to 4 September and another 3 weeks in October and November before ending the year.

Ministry changes

Dr Chalmers has been re-appointed as Treasurer and Katy Gallagher has been re-appointed as Finance Minister.

Daniel Mulino is the new Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Financial Services, following the retirement of Stephen Jones.

He will be responsible for implementing reforms on cryptocurrency, superannuation, financial advice and payment systems.

Andrew Leigh will have an expanded role as Minister for Productivity, Competition, Charities and Treasury.

Anne Aly will be the new Minister for Small Business, International Development and Multicultural Affairs.

Andrew Charlton has been appointed as the Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy.

Michelle Rowland is the new Attorney-General.

Responsibility for consumer credit reporting, personal property securities and bankruptcy has moved to Treasury from the Attorney-General’s Department.
